Provenance

[Presumably] Commissioned by the sitter, Samuel Sandys of Ombersley 1615-1685 and thence by descent at Ombersley Court. The presumed sitter was the son of Sir Edwin and Lady Penelope (nee Bulkeley) Sandys. He was MP for Droitwich from April 1640

The attribution to Johnson was confirmed by Sir Oliver Millar, Keeper of the Queen's pictures
