Oil painting on canvas 22 x 18 inches ( 54.5 x 45.5 cm) and contained within a fine carved and giltwood 17th century frame

Pietro Bellotti was born at Volzano, in the valley of the River Salo, in 1625, where he was baptised on 27th November of that year. At the age of twelve he moved to stay with his elder sister who had married and was living in Brescia: the incentive to move came both from his desire to find an apprenticeship with a painting master and from the economic pressures of a large family of his parents. Shortly afterwards Bellotti is recorded in Venice, working from 1638 as garzone in the studio of the baroque painter Gerolamo Forabosco (1605 - 23 January 1679) from whom over the next few years he developed the beginnings of his style
